2010 Bridal Guide January 27, 2010 Page 3 And the date of the big event is He just put the engagement ring on your finger and already you're dreaming about the type of the wed- ding you would like to have. Before you get too far into the wedding plan- ning, you might want to sit down with your fianc6 and determine a date for the big event. Most of the major deci- sions you will make from this point on about your wedding will hinge on that, so you want to select the right date. Selecting the right wedding date requires more than whipping out a calendar and pointing to a date at random. You probably already have some idea of the general time frame in which you would like to get married. Most couples prefer the spring and summer months over the fall and winter months due to the warmer weather. If you don't have a seasonal preference, then perhaps you have a holiday preference. Some couples look forward to getting married around Valentine's Day, while others look forward to getting married around Halloween. You might even have a personal pref- erence. Some couples focus on a par- ticular time period because it reflects nun the birthday or anniversary of an important person or event. Along with preference, the cli- mate of the region in which you live may factor in on your decision. In the Northeast, winters can be bit- terly cold and make having a wed- ding there during that time difficult, while on the coast, hurricane season can make having a wedding there during late summer and fall risky, If you live in warmer region like the Southwest, you may have more options. However, you will probably want to avoid mid-winter and late summer, when temperatures are at their worst. Culture and religion may also affect your decision. Certain cultures and religions prohibit marriage on certain days or times of years. Getting married on holy days, for example, is forbidden in some religions. Make sure you check with your family and officiant regarding what is appropri- ate for your culture and religion. Budget may be a factor as well. If you are on a tight budget, then you may want to focus on the off-season when prices will be lower and ven- dors will be more willing to strike a deal. If that is not possible, then you may want to focus on weekdays rather than weekends, when prices will be higher. In order to make your decision, these are just some of the factors you will have to consider. After you have narrowed your choice of dates to a select few, the schedules of those attending as well as the availability of the venue where you would like to be married may be the deciding factors. In addition to your own schedules, you will have to check the sched- ules of all parents, grandparents and attendants as well as anyone else you would like to be in attendance and make sure they are free on the dates you have chosen. If you have your heart set on par- ticular location, you will also have to check with officials there to ensure it has not been booked on the dates you have in mind. Once you have completed this final step, a final date will probably emerge. If not, feel free to select the date that appeals to you most. "I should have tried it on again before the wed- ding, but figured it was okay," said Libby. Grandma came to the rescue once again and quickly made the needed repairs prior to the ceremony. Rob and Libby were married at Seeds of Faith Church in Lester. Libby wore an off-white dress and carried purple calla lilies. She wore her sister's veil and her Grandma Gerber's garter. Her attendants, Lisa Stark, Jenn Jenson, Amelia Johnson, Sara Wurgler and Jenna Waltner, wore lapis colored gowns from David's Bridal and carried small bouquets of white calla lil- ies and purple tulips. Libby's personal atten- dants were Traci Knoblock and Nicolette Schmuck. Rob's nieces, Kortni and Kayla Jenson, were flower girls with Libby's 3-month- old niece, Emma Wurgler, as an honorary attendant. Rob wore a black tuxedo with a white vest and tie. His boutonniere was a pur- ple calla lily. His attendants, Marc Jenson, Darin Naatjes, Ian Stark, Ted Gerber and Jon Gerber, wore black tux- edos with purple vests and ties from Carrows Formal Wear. Jack Erickson was the ring bearer. Jon Van Egdom, Andy Siebenborn, Aaron Wurgler and Matt Kneebone were ushers. The altar was decorated with two urns filled with purple iris, large purple car- nations, white hydrangeas and white delphiniums. All floral arrangements were provided by Cheryl Phipps, owner of Special Occasions Floral of Larchwood. The ceremony went off without a hitch and Libby said, "It went so well. It was perfect." The day of the wedding was "a blur for me," said Rob. "I don't remember much. It was like a strobe light was going off all day. It was like my senses were all overloaded. I was really nervous for the wedding because I knew it was a huge commitment to give yourself to someone for the rest of your life. "I had just finished read- ing Tony Dungy's book which talked about how you are suppose to treat and love your wife," he contin- ued. "He was saying that God says you need to love your wife like He loves the church. Those words carried a lot of weight for me so that TUXEDOS WEDDING RENTAL FLOWERS GUFTS is why I was so nervous." He also said marriages on both sides of their fami- lies have paved the way for how marriages should be. The reception was at All Occasions in Tea, S.D. Plans were to have people begin eating while the wed- ding party stayed behind for pictures, which were taken by Melinda Ver Meer and Audrey Halverson. Unfortunately, a miscom- munication resulted in the caterer not being ready to serve the meal until an hour after it was suppose be. The wedding party went by limo-bus from Limousine Services Inc. and arrived at the reception to find people still waiting to eat. A few diversionary tactics such as making toasts, etc., were implemented to entertain the crowd until the meal was ready. Jay and Carol Rozeboom were guest book attendants and Ken and Cindy Waltner were host and hostess. A dance followed with A&A Entertainment provid- ing the disc jockey. A high- light of the evening was when the groom's father, who had proclaimed at the wedding of Libby's sister that he would dance on the table at the next Gerber wedding, held true to his pronnse. Rob and Libby booked a wedding trip to Riviera Mya, Mexico, through All About Travel. Their flight was leaving very early the day after the wedding, so by the time the dance and festivities ended, the cou- ple just stayed up so they could be at the airport by 3 a.m. for check-in. They enjoyed about a week relax- ing, swimming with the dolphins and attending a concert which turned into a family joke. Rob and Libby saw a poster advertising a Michael Jackson concert, which, of course, meant someone would be impersonating him. Only problem was, Libby forgot to explain that fact when she e-mailed her mother about the concert. As fate would have it, the concert was the day before the real Michael Jackson died, and her mother was telling people back home that they had seen Michael Jackson in his last concert. Some explaining had to be done and mother was a bit embarrassed, but they laugh about it now. The couple returned to Sioux Falls where they now live. One more day You're looking over the schedule of events planned for your wedding reception and you're starting to think that between the dancing and the cake cutting you're not going to have enough time to mingle with your guests and say thank you. Why not extend your wedding another day with a post-wedding brunch the following morning? It will give you a chance to connect with guests you might have missed at the reception and thank everyone for coming. Unlike your wedding ceremony and reception, a post- wedding brunch does not have to be an elaborate affair. You may have it at your home, in a park, at a restaurant or wherever would be convenient for you and your guests. You can make it an open house and invite everyone who attended your wedding or restrict it to the wedding party and close friends and family members. Just make sure you don't invite anyone who wasn't invited to your wedding. Not only will they feel out of place, but they may feel slighted. You should schedule your post-wedding brunch so that guests having to catch an early flight may attend it and those wanting to sleep in and attend later can. For many, 7-10 a.m. is ideal, but depending upon the schedules of you and your guests, that time slot may not work. Once you've chosen a location and a time, you may send out official invitations by mail or e-mail or phone your invitations. When planning the menu for your post-wedding brunch, try to keep it simple. Serve a buffet of breakfast foods and let people serve themselves. Menu options may include eggs, bacon, sausage, French toast or pancakes, toast, bagels, fresh fruit and coffee, milk, juice and water. If you'd like, you can even serve sandwiches and other foods for those who show up later. Throughout the brunch, make sure you stop and chat with every guest. Thank them for coming and don't forget to wish them a safe trip home if they are traveling. Once the brunch is over, you'll be able to leave for your honeymoon satisfied that you have said thank you and made sure that everyone was well fed.
