The Sioux County Index-Reporter Wednesday, April 21, 2010 R yn Boone Reformed Church Jesus Lives In the late 1960s Bill and Gloria Gaither had two children and were expecting a third. Bill was recovering from an illness, their second child was only three months old, the marriage of Bill's sister had just failed and a close friend had accused them of crass com- mercialism. And it was the '60s: "God is Dead," the war, assassinations, racial strife, drug abuse. It did not seem the right time to bring another child into the world. During a prayer with one of their friends, the Gaithers redis- covered the power of the resurrection. They believed again that their lives were in God's hands and that the future was nothing to be afraid of. In 1970, their third child, Benjamin, was born. Inspired by hisbirth, Bill and Gloria's "grateful hearts" poured out these words: "Because He lives, I can face tomorrow; because He lives, all fear is gone. Because I know He holds the future, and life is worth the living just because He lives." The words of Because He Lives affirms that we can face tomorrow, with all its uncertainty, as we realize that God holds the future and makes life worth living. My prayer is that in this season of "resurrection" hope will be kindled in your hearts. You may have uncertain days ahead with your health, jobs and relationships, but because Jesus lives you can face any- thing in his resurrection power. Paul said it this way in Ephesians 1:18-20, "1 pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious, inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead." The same power that raised Christ from the dead is at work in you to empower you to face whatever comes your way in life. You and I can face tomorrow, because Jesus lives.
