Orange City woman arrested for offenses Sioux County Attorney Coleman J. McAIlister announced that Melissa Jo Netten, 44 of Orange City was sentenced Friday, Nov. 5, 2010, in Sioux County District Court for the crimes of eluding, an aggravated misdemeanor, in violation of Iowa Code Section 321.279(2);. and criminal mischief in the third degree, an aggravat- ed misdemeanor, in viola- tion of Iowa Code Sections 716.1 and 716.5. Sioux County Attorney Coleman J. McAIlister pros- ecuted the case on behalf of the State of Iowa. This case arose on July 29, 2010, at 6:30 p.m., when Sioux Center police offi- cers received a number of citizen complaints that a woman was walking down the middle of Highway 75 in Sioux Center -- acting strangely -- and nearly causing several traffic acci- dents. One caller reported that it appeared that the woman was trying to get hit by oncoming traffic. Officers responded and discovered the defendant getting into her pickup truck at the Wal-mart parking lot in Sioux Center. The defendant refused to cooperate with offi- cers and a vehicle pursuit began. The pursuit ended in Orange City when the defendant lost control of her vehicle and struck a barrier in the parking lot of Northwestern College. After striking the barrier, the defendant was blocked in by three patrol cars and again refused to cooperate. She rammed her vehicle into an Iowa State Patrol car, causing damage, and then struck an Orange City patrol car. The defendant was then forcibly removed from her vehicle by offi- cers and transported to the Orange City hospital for treatment. The defendant was sen- tenced to two years in pris- on on the eluding charge and one year in prison on the criminal mischief charge, with the sentences to run consecutively, for a total of three years of imprisonment. However, all but seven days of the sentence was suspended and the defen- dant was placed on proba- tion for two years. As specific conditions of probation, the defendant was ordered to pay resti- tution for damage to the police vehicle, abstain from all mood-altering chemi- cals, maintain verifiable employment and pay a $1250 fine plus a 32 per- cent surcharge and court costs. The defendant's conviction for eluding will result in a revocation of her driver license and motor vehicle operating privileg- es by the Iowa Department of Transportation.
